Publishers, authors, illustrators, bookstores, distributors and all those involved in creating books are closely linked to free, grassroots libraries as they share a common goal – to spread the joy of reading to all, to have our words, ideas, thoughts to reach the widest audience possible and to empower people through stories, ideas & voices found in books.
The Publishers, Writers and Illustrators Compact: (English, Hindi) is an agreement between FLN and bookmakers, laying out a vision and roadmap of how authors, publishers and illustrators can be part of the free library movement. FLN commits to building, developing and agitating for creation of a public library infrastructure by driving the movement demanding free libraries. The Compact asks publishers, authors, illustrators and all those in the space of creating, publishing and distributing books to support this on multiple levels by: (a) Offering books, discounts and curatorial expertise (b) Developing industry standards that can support free libraries (c) Powering the discourse that advocates for free, accessible, diverse & relevant book collections including addressing censorship & book-banning. (d) Opening literary doors in previously under-tapped regions of India, building new reading & writing spaces through public & grassroots libraries.
